Alan McNiel
Interest in art has always been a key aspect of my life. I enjoy a wide variety of creative styles, but find my own work most influenced by modern artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Pablo Picasso.
In college I realized this was a career path for which I'd have great enthusiasm, and graduated from Colorado State University (BFA) in 1978 and the University of Montana (MA) in 1987.
After the university I worked as a potter for a number of years, making wood-fired vessels covered with bas-relief carving.
I loved making pottery, and planned on doing it forever. Then, in 1995 I entered a competition to create a poster for one of my favorite art fairs. The success of that poster encouraged me to continue, and I soon found myself painting full-time.
My most recent images revolve around the concept of complexity, with urban landscape as the subject matter. In these paintings I combine oil and encaustic paint with black & white digital photography, building images which reflect my perception of the day-to-day experience of living at this point in history.
